Pillow fit guide: matching pillow height to how you sleep
Updated July 31, 2026
Why pillow height matters
A pillow's job is to fill the space between your head and the mattress so your neck can rest in a relaxed, roughly neutral line. When a pillow is too tall or too short for that space, your neck bends up or down all night. The right height depends on your body geometry, your sleep position, and how far you sink into your mattress — not on a universal "best pillow."
Compressed height, not package loft
The number printed on a pillow box is its unloaded loft. Under the weight of a resting head, most pillows compress by a third or more, and materials compress differently: shredded foam and down compress a lot, solid latex and molded foam much less. What supports you at 3 a.m. is the compressed height, which is why Pillow Pair estimates a compressed-height range instead of matching package loft directly.
Side sleeping
Side sleepers usually need the tallest pillow of any position. The pillow has to span roughly the distance from the base of the neck to the point of the shoulder, minus however far the shoulder sinks into the mattress. Broad shoulders and firm mattresses push that number up; narrow shoulders and deep-sinking mattresses bring it down. A pillow that collapses too far leaves the head tilted down toward the mattress; one that is too tall tilts it up.
Back sleeping
Back sleepers need a noticeably lower pillow — just enough to support the natural curve of the neck without pushing the head forward. If your chin points toward your chest while lying on your back, the pillow is likely too tall. People with a more forward head posture sometimes need slightly more height, which is one of the measurements Pillow Pair estimates from the guided side photo.
Stomach sleeping
Stomach sleepers generally need the thinnest, softest pillow — or none at all — because any added height rotates the neck upward while the head is already turned to the side. If you sleep mostly on your stomach, look at low-loft, compressible options and consider a supportive pillow under the pelvis instead.
Mattress firmness changes everything
The same person needs a taller pillow on a firm mattress than on a plush one, because a plush mattress absorbs part of the shoulder. This is why Pillow Pair asks about mattress firmness and sink: two people with identical bodies can need meaningfully different pillow heights on different beds.
Materials, adjustability, and temperature
Adjustable-fill pillows (shredded foam, down alternative) let you remove or add fill to tune the compressed height, which makes them forgiving if your estimate lands between sizes. Solid latex and molded foam hold their height consistently but must be chosen closer to the right size up front. Hot sleepers may prefer ventilated latex, breathable covers, or cooling-treated foams.
How Pillow Pair estimates your range
Pillow Pair combines your height, weight, optional head circumference, guided front and side photos processed on your device, sleep position, and mattress answers to estimate a compressed pillow-height range. It then ranks specific manufacturer products and configurations against that range using transparent rules. Read more about the approach and its current limits on the methodology page.
